Mobile Web and Google ETA - Behind the scenes

Google ETA

Last week eMarketer reported that Google’s worldwide ad revenue will almost be 50% from mobile. Managing digital experiences via mobile should be on every product managers near term road map. On one road map we saw this week, the client had planned on rolling out a new way to comply with Expanded Text Ad requirements in the previous three months. Between javascript hacks and a reluctance to want to purchase domains the client is now 45 - 60 days out from Google’s latest deadline in January.

Whether potential or existing clients know of the upcoming Google ETA deadline or understand what ETA requirements are, is hard to determine. We’ve covered in depth how we solve for most of the Google ETA requirements (outlined below) -

b) Proxy lives under a subdirectory within their primary domain

Customer Involvement: Customer must give access to their server configuration or have a tech contact on their side that can do this for them. Not all hosting providers will support this option.

Navigating The Crowded Marketing Technology Landscape

It’s funny that I write this from inside a box - CMS & Web Experience Management. Here in a crowded ecosystem of marketing technology companies - product managers have to learn which ones are the real deal v. vaporware. Here too, each solution provides a piece of puzzle that may not sync with the player next to them.

Marketing Tech landscape

Product Managers firstly need to lay out the product road map. Spell out what it is you want to solve and for who. Be on the look-out for understanding what technologies are sustainable - not today but - forever. Forever is a hard word to wrap heads around as technological advances are happening at interstellar speed. Today, it's the mobile web - tomorrow it’s VR and location based display targeting. 

Product managers cannot survive without learning to anticipate whether the next trend itself is sustainable - remember: flash?  So, how does a product manager pick the right technology company? - simple - PEOPLE. People are behind all 3000+ marketing tech companies - learning which ones are committed to innovation is the hard part. A good place to start is ask to see a company's github commits - average 2 to 3 a day per technical employee. As a baseline: since July 2009 DevHub has 16k commits and 128 releases logged in github. 

Once in awhile marketing tech companies are started by executives from other technology company’s who themselves are looking for tech talent to create a ‘New’ technology - this is bad. Technology companies should have at least 1 technical co-Founder from the start. 

Martech has come a long way since 2011. Agile tech is key to adapt to your unique solution -picking the right tech that's the skill/ experience of a solid product manager.

Reporting from the front lines of web experience and marketing strategies. An interesting mix of web strategy and scaled execution are emerging from a previously hacked together approach to web/ digital experience.

Product managers are wanting to control large swaths of the digital footprint their clients need -in order to allow marketing to execute efficiently. Whether, vertical specific sites for real estate agents or franchise sites controlled at the corporate level for branding consistency but flexible enough to allow local operators to update.

The approach mentioned above is different from even a year ago. Agencies were allowing creative and web designers to build sites one by one - but as the clients needs changed the upkeep of 25, 50, 100, 1800 sites/ landing pages became a nightmare. Now multi-site CMS and web experience platforms are being adopted at a faster rate. 

As marketing technologies (martech) fill an already crowded space the commoditization of CRMs, email...etc has begun. While most will fade out - the tried and true solutions will emerge on top.
