Mobile Web and Google ETA - Behind the scenes

October 31, 2016 By - 0 Comments

Google ETA

Last week eMarketer reported that Google’s worldwide ad revenue will almost be 50% from mobile. Managing digital experiences via mobile should be on every product managers near term road map. On one road map we saw this week, the client had planned on rolling out a new way to comply with Expanded Text Ad requirements in the previous three months. Between javascript hacks and a reluctance to want to purchase domains the client is now 45 - 60 days out from Google’s latest deadline in January.

“We got the call this week, Daniel Rust CTO/ co-Founder of DevHub explains. They (client) is ready to do a migration for all 3000+ proxied sites to DevHub - needless to say - the collective breadth from the other side of the call was relief.”

Whether potential or existing clients know of the upcoming Google ETA deadline or understand what ETA requirements are, is hard to determine. We’ve covered in depth how we solve for most of the Google ETA requirements (outlined below) -

DevHub solves for the “proxy URL deprecation,” or “deprecation of Whitelisted Proxies.”

Here are some of the ways we handle proxies within DevHub:

1) Domains You Register or Control (no customer involvement needed)

a) Group sites underneath a common domain (most proxy tech supports this)

b) Register a domain for the customer, dedicated to the proxy

c) Register a domain for the customer and use subdomains for each campaign

2) Domains Owned by Customers
a) Proxy lives as a subdomain of the customer’s primary domain

Customer Involvement: Customer must set a DNS record to point to our servers

b) Proxy lives under a subdirectory within their primary domain

Customer Involvement: Customer must give access to their server configuration or have a tech contact on their side that can do this for them. Not all hosting providers will support this option.

DevHub’s Landing Page and Proxy solutions both support flexible URL options which allow its partners to manage campaigns on custom domains or even under a Customer’s existing domain.

With our proprietary migration tech, we are able to match sites/ landing pages 99.9% so your customers do not know the difference. Unifying all disparate landing page campaigns, websites, vertical specific solutions on DevHub is easy and safe; which is quite the opposite of how companies use their web platforms today.

October 27, 2016 By - 0 Comments

Last week our CEO/ co-Founder Mark Michael did a guest post for Monkey Media Online Ordering software (read in full here).

Excerpt below:

Problem: Integrating Franchisees’ Location Pages into a National Brand’s Digital Strategy

  • Location pages with no dedicated URLs, or URLs with poor structure
  • One corporate-level Location page listing all location addresses
  • No SEO or geographic information in Location URLs
  • Franchisees’ orphaned web presence or Google+ pages with outdated info
  • Inconsistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) details across the web
  • Google+ Location profiles link directly to Corporate Site
  • Franchisees’ Location Finder, Location Pages, and Online Ordering are out of sync and on separate systems

 Problem, Solved

  • SEO-optimized URL for each location
  • Breadcrumb Sitemap for enhanced Spidering, e.g., ⁃ /new-york/bedford-hills/
  • Location pages contain RDF and Geo Metatags
  • Online ordering integration
  • Business listing management integration
  • Location finder
  • Full funnel tracking

Navigating The Crowded Marketing Technology Landscape

October 26, 2016 By - 0 Comments

It’s funny that I write this from inside a box - CMS & Web Experience Management. Here in a crowded ecosystem of marketing technology companies - product managers have to learn which ones are the real deal v. vaporware. Here too, each solution provides a piece of puzzle that may not sync with the player next to them.

DevHub is your marketing suite built around the foundational experience of websites to landing pages and everything in between.

Marketing Tech landscape

Product Managers firstly need to lay out the product road map. Spell out what it is you want to solve and for who. Be on the look-out for understanding what technologies are sustainable - not today but - forever. Forever is a hard word to wrap heads around as technological advances are happening at interstellar speed. Today, it's the mobile web - tomorrow it’s VR and location based display targeting.

Product managers cannot survive without learning to anticipate whether the next trend itself is sustainable - remember: flash?  So, how does a product manager pick the right technology company? - simple - PEOPLE. People are behind all 3000+ marketing tech companies - learning which ones are committed to innovation is the hard part. A good place to start is ask to see a company's github commits - average 2 to 3 a day per technical employee. As a baseline: since July 2009 DevHub has 16k commits and 128 releases logged in github.

Once in awhile marketing tech companies are started by executives from other technology company’s who themselves are looking for tech talent to create a ‘New’ technology - this is bad. Technology companies should have at least 1 technical co-Founder from the start.

Martech has come a long way since 2011. Agile tech is key to adapt to your unique solution -picking the right tech that's the skill/ experience of a solid product manager.

What’s Working?

October 25, 2016 By - 0 Comments

Reporting from the front lines of web experience and marketing strategies. An interesting mix of web strategy and scaled execution are emerging from a previously hacked together approach to web/ digital experience.

Product managers are wanting to control large swaths of the digital footprint their clients need -in order to allow marketing to execute efficiently. Whether, vertical specific sites for real estate agents or franchise sites controlled at the corporate level for branding consistency but flexible enough to allow local operators to update.

The approach mentioned above is different from even a year ago. Agencies were allowing creative and web designers to build sites one by one - but as the clients needs changed the upkeep of 25, 50, 100, 1800 sites/ landing pages became a nightmare. Now multi-site CMS and web experience platforms are being adopted at a faster rate.

As marketing technologies (martech) fill an already crowded space the commoditization of CRMs, email...etc has begun. While most will fade out - the tried and true solutions will emerge on top.

Here is who we see as the winners so far in 2016:

  • Twilio - Call driven solutions powered by APIs
  • Yext - Business Listing Management/ Local
  • Mixpanel - Robust Analytics
  • Hatchbuck - CRM/ Marketing
  • Navads - International business listing management
  • Reachedge
  • Optimizely - A/B testing
  • SOCI - Social
  • Google Tag Manager
  • Google Call Tracking/ Adwords
